Cascading Style Sheets CSS: Definition, Types & Examples Video & Lesson Transcript

A class may apply to any number of instances of any element. CSS styles done this way are loaded each time an entire website is refreshed, which may increase loading time. Additionally, you won’t be able to use the same CSS style on multiple pages as it’s contained within a single page. Having everything on one page makes it easier to share the template for a preview.

The right column indicates whether or not the property is inherited. Even if you’re not a programmer, you’ve probably heard of HTML. It’s the most fundamental markup language and it’s been around since the nineties. It’s an element of programming that’s just as important, and along with HTML and JavaScript, CSS is one of the three main cornerstones of technologies for the web.

Dreamweaver and CSS

Usually, we combine different types of selectors in our CSS to make the rules. We can use a relatively simple technique to rate the specificity level of each rule. If you’re going to do this, you need to base Heading 1 on “No Style” because Word has 9 levels of Headings, and only accepts 9 generations of styles. I actually like this “feature”, because it completely separates the formatting of the headings and the body text. So I can make a change to all the headings easily without affecting any body text, and vice versa. It’s a good idea to set up your heading styles so that Heading 2 is based on Heading 1, Heading 3 is based on Heading 2, and so on.

CSS styles often must be duplicated in several rules to achieve the desired effect, causing additional maintenance and requiring more thorough testing. The cascade is an algorithm that defines how user agents combine property values originating from different sources. The cascade defines the origin and layer that takes precedence when declarations in more than one origin or cascade layer set a value for a property on an element. This means you can do all the styling on a separate file and apply the CSS to any page you want. Cascading style sheets can also control how various parts of a page, such as the header, footer, body, article content, sections and asides, are laid out on the page. This is extremely helpful when content must be laid out in a dramatically different fashion depending upon whether it is being viewed on a desktop, tablet or a smartphone.

Low-Content CSS Design

It contains thousands of paper examples on a wide variety of topics, all donated by helpful students. You can use them for inspiration, an insight into a particular topic, a handy source of reference, or even just as a template of a certain type of paper. The database is updated daily, what is css so anyone can easily find a relevant essay example. To solve this problem, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created CSS. Please note, though, that the use of CSS does not in itself make a Web page accessible. The most critical consideration is the use of valid, semantic (X)HTML.

  • You can view a detailed report by clicking on Reported broken links or Assets with broken links option.
  • A webpage can link to zero, one or may different external CSS files by using multiple link tags.
  • Even if you’re not a programmer, you’ve probably heard of HTML.
  • But just what is CSS, how does it work, and why is it so critical?
  • Think of style sheets as a kind of computer dress code, a uniform way to display web pages with a consistent look and feel.

CSS gives developers the ability to change the linear layout of a page — the order of elements on a Web page when all styles and formatting are removed — without altering its visual layout. This is important because the linear reading order of Web content is the order in which screen readers access the content. Another advantage with CSS is that it gives the end user control over the Web page style as well.

For example, the user can change the background color or increase the font. One of the goals of CSS is to allow users greater control over presentation. Someone who finds red italic headings difficult to read may apply a different style sheet. Browser extensions like Stylish and Stylus have been created to facilitate the management of such user style sheets. The style (which comes from a rule, or a collection of rules)
resides in a place separate from the actual text it’s formatting—usually
in an external style sheet, or in the head portion of an HTML document. Thus, one rule for h1 tags can apply to many tags
at once (and in the case of external style sheets, the rule can
apply to many tags at once on many different pages).

When written using shorthand notation, omitted values are automatically assigned
their default values. Thus, the previous shorthand example omits
the font-variant, font-style, font-stretch,
and font-size-adjust tags. A key issue to note when using shorthand CSS, is that values
omitted from a shorthand CSS property are assigned their default
value.

Without CSS, web designers must typically lay out their pages with techniques such as HTML tables that hinder accessibility for vision-impaired users (see Tableless web design#Accessibility). There is no way to name a CSS rule, which would allow (for example) client-side scripts to refer to the rule even if its selector changes. This article explains what the cascade is and the order in which CSS declarations cascade, covering cascade layers and origin type. Understanding origin precedence is key to understanding the cascade.

A stylesheet, internal or external, specifies the style once for a range of HTML elements selected by class, type or relationship to others. This is much more efficient than repeating style information inline for each occurrence of the element. An external stylesheet is usually stored in the browser cache, and can therefore be used on multiple pages without being reloaded, further reducing data transfer over a network.
